this topic will basically be about how people once trusted diaries , now they trust chatbots .
Paper has more patience than people - Anne Frank , we believed it for a long time . Diaries became safe spaces . Pages didn’t interrupt , didn’t judge , didn’t rush. They listened to our sorrows , happiness in silence .
You’d start with dear diary , spill all your emotional chaos and slam the book shut like you just dropped the hottest gossip of the century .
Fast forward to now something has shifted , who’s got the time to handwrite their feelings when your brain is doing a whole emotional concert at 3 am ?
so what do we do ? we type hey gpt why does everything not feel good today? , be honest , am i sounding too rude ? no seen at (time) just answers that satisfies us . Its coded to be chill and supportive . It will give answer just how we want it to .
PAPER HAD PATIENCE , AI HAS TIME
PAPER LISTENED , AI REPLIES
We are no longer using AI to just solve doubts or out of curiosity , we are pouring text and chatting with them as if its our bff . I saw this one boy in my class literally chatting with gpt like we do on whatsapp and another girl I know she uses character ai ( app than can create person you want and you can chat with ) that day I got to know the extent of AI which has somehow entered in daily part of our life . Those talks with mom when we came home from school - how did the school go ? how was your day ? has now lost ! and over the time we forget that there is a diary kept in a dusty corner of our room waiting to be picked up . Maybe we use AI because it responds , it feels endless or maybe - just maybe - we are still searching for that same quiet listener ……but with answers and strangely …..it helped . We have upgraded from diary to gpt .
Sure gpt replies but there is still something sacred about a diary . It doesn’t predict , doesn’t suggest and most importantly doesn’t autocomplete our emotions . It just sits there - waiting , quiet and still ours . Rather than ai it doesn’t analyse our sadness . it lets us feel it . It doesn’t format our thoughts . It lets them be messy , raw , honest .
So maybe gpt is the friend you text at 2 am but the diary is something we always returned back to - just like home .
thank you for reading Shreeyam's substack .I hope you liked it .
